“The Dane who shone at Atleti and overcame a personal crisis”
Jesper Gronkjaer is one of the two only Danes who have played for Atlético de Madrid. He arrived in the winter market of the 2004-05 season and, although he was only there for half a season, he left a good memory at the club. He stood out for his skill on the wing and his speed.
One of his best games was at the Camp Nou, where Atleti won 0-2. However, in the summer he asked to leave and the club transferred him to Stuttgart. In several subsequent interviews, he has acknowledged that he probably rushed his departure.
In Stuttgart, things did not go well for him and he only lasted a year. In 2006 he returned to his country, to Copenhagen. There he performed well, although a serious knee injury that became complicated made him have some bad months between 2008 and 2009.
In 2011 he announced his retirement: ‘I am worn out, but not exhausted’. In 2016, however, he had a brief stint at the amateur team Graesrodderne, while starting a career in television as a commentator. And then his decline began. Fatigue, eruptions, hair loss, headache…
His body began to send signals to Gronkjaer. In 2017 he had to stop and left television due to the stress he was accumulating. Faced with such a desperate situation, Jesper was admitted to a psychiatric clinic. After nine months off, in January 2018 he began to resume his life, but more calmly.
And to comment on matches on television again. ‘I am still myself, but in another edition. My life has changed. I have other priorities’, he explained. Gronkjaer resurfaces and continues to comment on TV3 Sport the Premier and the Champions.

“Atlético de Madrid’s academy thriving
Atlético de Madrid’s academy is in a great moment, with the Atleti B established in Primera RFEF and the juvenile A lifting two of the last three leagues.
Pablo Barrios and Riquelme are the latest academy players to stand out, with Barrios already accumulating 70 appearances in the first team and Riquelme on his way to becoming the fifth debutant of Simeone with the most games played.
Both players have earned a place in the squad thanks to their talent and effort, and are a luxury reinforcement in a position where the first team has had difficulties. Atlético de Madrid’s academy is growing and nurturing the first team, with a lot of youth and talent on the way.
