Atlético and River: A historic red and white bond
Atlético de Madrid celebrated its 122nd anniversary and received congratulations from clubs around the world, especially the emotional message from River Plate. The Argentine club recalled the strong historical connection that unites both institutions, highlighting the players who have proudly defended both jerseys.
River Plate’s message, accompanied by an illustration, focuses on figures like Julián Álvarez, current star of Atleti and champion of the Libertadores with River, symbolizing the present and future of this relationship.
The image also features emblematic names such as Fillol, Falcao, Mono Burgos and Kranevitter, who left their mark on both the Argentine club and the Madrid club. The list of players who have worn both shirts is extensive and rich in talent, including Solari, Augusto Fernández, Esnáider, Lequi, Pato Sosa and Celso Ayala, among others.
The connection between Atlético and River goes beyond the players, reaching iconic figures such as Diego Pablo Simeone. El Cholo, a legend of Atleti as a player and coach, also managed River Plate, further consolidating the ties between both clubs.
His son, Giuliano Simeone, also was part of the academy of the Argentine club, reaffirming the deep relationship between the two institutions. An anniversary that celebrates the shared history and the red and white spirit that unites Madrid and Buenos Aires.
