Giménez and other Uruguayans: Sanction confirmed

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has issued its ruling on the sanctions imposed on several Uruguayan players, including our José María Giménez, following incidents at the end of the 2024 Copa América semi-final between Uruguay and Colombia.

The appeal, filed by the players and the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), sought to overturn or reduce the sanctions imposed by CONMEBOL, which included suspensions and fines for both the players and the AUF.

Unfortunately, CAS has rejected the appeal, thus confirming the original sanctions. In the case of Giménez, this means a fine of $12,000 and a three-match suspension. Other affected players include Darwin Núñez, Rodrigo Betancur, Ronald Araujo and Mathías Olivera, who also received various financial and sporting sanctions.

The players argued that they acted in self-defense during the altercations, but CAS determined that their behavior was voluntary, violent and unjustified, violating the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Code. Despite this setback, we trust in the professionalism and fighting spirit of our Giménez, who will undoubtedly come back stronger to defend the red and white colors. Always supporting our warriors!
