Carrillo: A Red and White Signing That Never Was
André Carrillo, ‘La Culebra’, recently revealed that he was very close to wearing the red and white jersey. After standing out in Portugal, Atlético de Madrid set their sights on him, but his arrival at the Metropolitano was frustrated for two reasons.
The first, and most worrying, was a health problem detected in the medical examinations prior to signing. According to Carrillo, one of his kidneys was not working properly, generating great uncertainty in the player about his professional future.
The second obstacle was the lack of quota for foreign players in the colchonera squad. The club was waiting for the departure of a South American player to be able to finalize Carrillo’s signing.
Faced with this uncertain situation and the need to secure his future, the Peruvian player chose to accept Benfica’s offer, where he did not have to go through medical examinations. A pity for Atlético, who could have had a player of his talent, although the player’s health always comes first.
