Rojiblancos Ups and Downs: An Analysis of the Second Half of the Season
Atlético de Madrid has experienced notable inconsistency in the second half of LaLiga, contrasting with the Winter Champion title obtained after defeating Osasuna at the Metropolitano with a goal from Julián Alvarez.
That victory meant the eighth consecutive for the Colchoneros, who faced the second half of the season with great expectations, even surpassing Barcelona at Montjuïc. However, performance away from the Metropolitano declined.
The solidity and effectiveness previously shown were transformed into doubts, affecting the accumulation of points. Unexpected defeats in fields such as Leganés, Getafe and Las Palmas, teams fighting for permanence, added to a worrying loss of points.
Draws against Alavés and the RCDE Stadium also hampered their aspirations. These results place Atlético with the second worst second half of the season since the arrival of Simeone. If only the points from the second half were counted, the team would be far from the top spots.
With the end of the season approaching and with matches such as the visit to Osasuna and the closing in Montilivi against Girona, Atlético adds 23 points in this second phase, surpassed by its records from previous seasons.
The participation in multiple competitions and the lack of depth in the squad seem to have affected the team. The ambition shown in all tournaments, added to hard blows such as the elimination in Champions against Real Madrid, negatively impacted the team’s performance, which must now recover before the Club World Cup.
