Abascal in Charge: A New Era in San Luis
Atlético San Luis has announced the hiring of Spaniard Guillermo Abascal as their new coach for the Apertura 2025 tournament. At 36 years old, Abascal becomes the youngest coach to lead the club in Liga MX, promising a fresh vision and a boost to the sports project to return the team to the forefront of Mexican football.
The Potosí club, a subsidiary of Atlético de Madrid, is betting on Abascal’s international experience, who has managed teams in Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Russia and Spain, including Lugano, Basel, Ascoli, Volos, Spartak Moscow and Granada.
Abascal has expressed his enthusiasm for this new challenge, committing to working with intensity and conviction to build a competitive team that proudly represents San Luis Potosí.
San Luis, which was promoted to the first division after being two-time champion in the 2018-2019 season, has achieved five classifications to the final phase in 12 tournaments, reaching the semifinals in the Apertura 2023 and 2024. Its key players include Uruguayan Juan Sanabria, with a past in the Colchonero subsidiary, Frenchman Sebastien Salles-Lamonge, and Brazilians Rodrigo Dourado, Leonardo Bonatini and Vitinho.
