Calderón: An Unforgettable Legacy
The Senate of Atlético de Madrid is promoting a moving initiative: requesting the Madrid City Council to name one of the streets surrounding the former Atlético de Madrid Park, where our mythical stadium was located, after Vicente Calderón.
A more than deserved tribute to one of the most successful and beloved presidents in the club’s history. His leadership, from 1964 to 1980, gave us unforgettable moments, including the conquest of four Leagues, three Cups and an Intercontinental Cup.
The proposal focuses on renaming the extension of Duque de Tovar street, thus perpetuating the memory of the stadium that was our home from 1966 to 2017. It would be the third street dedicated to Calderón in Spain, joining those already existing in Torrelavega and Gandía.
The Senate of Atlético de Madrid has formally submitted the request to the City Council, arguing the need to honor the person who was a great ambassador of Madrid thanks to his management at the head of the club.
They seek to repair the lack of recognition in the city towards his figure, requesting that a street remember both the president and the wonderful stadium that welcomed the Atlético fans for so many years. Currently, the request is being evaluated in the Arganzuela district. From the Senate of Atlético de Madrid they assure that they will not give up their efforts until Vicente Calderón receives the tribute he deserves. A gesture that would undoubtedly be greatly appreciated by the entire rojiblanca family!
