Refereeing Controversy: IFAB Sides with Atlético
Atlético de Madrid’s elimination from the Champions League continues to generate controversy, especially due to the referee’s decision in the penalty shootout against Julián Álvarez. Supporters’ clubs are even considering legal action.
However, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the regulatory body for football rules, has issued a circular that sides with Atlético. IFAB Circular 31 analyzes Julián Álvarez’s penalty action, and considers that referee Szymon Marciniak’s decision was unfair and contrary to the spirit of the rule.
IFAB clarifies that if a player accidentally hits the ball with both feet when taking a penalty, or the ball touches his foot or leg immediately after the shot due to a slip, the penalty should be retaken if the ball goes in.
This pronouncement from IFAB, although it does not change the result of the match, reinforces the feeling of grievance felt by Atlético fans. According to IFAB, Álvarez’s penalty should have been retaken, since the double touch, if it existed, was unintentional.
If the shot is not a goal, an indirect free kick will be awarded, or in the case of a penalty shootout, it will be recorded as missed. These clarifications will be effective from July 2025, although they could be applied sooner. Atlético de Madrid, and its fans, now see how the highest arbitration body recognizes the injustice suffered in that crucial match.
