Atlético de Madrid has been close to signing two world-class strikers who currently shine at Inter Milan: Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram. In 2017, Lautaro even signed a pre-agreement with the Rojiblancos.
However, a contract renewal with Racing, which raised his release clause, frustrated the operation and paved the way for his arrival at Inter. Atlético was willing to pay the original clause of 12 million, but not the 25 million after the renewal.
Years later, in 2023, Atlético showed interest in Marcus Thuram, who was becoming a free agent from Mönchengladbach. Andrea Berta, the club’s sporting director, saw in the Frenchman an opportunity to reinforce the attack after the departures of João Félix and Cunha.
The German club requested 12 million for the transfer in January, but Atlético preferred to wait for his contract to expire. Ultimately, Inter jumped ahead and took the player by paying a signing bonus.
Ironically, Thuram visited the Metropolitano as an Inter player in the Champions League round of 16, where Atlético prevailed on penalties, with Lautaro missing the final kick.
