Atlético de Madrid in Cáceres: a story of controversy and elections
Atlético de Madrid has played twice in Cáceres, the first time in 1982 in the Copa del Rey against Cacereño, which ended in a draw (1-1) and then in a victory at the Calderón (4-2) in extra time.
The second match was more controversial, a league match against Deportivo in 1992, which was moved to Cáceres due to a sanction against Atlético. The match was played at the Príncipe Felipe, with additional stands for the occasion. Atlético lost 1-2, which led Jesús Gil to say he was looking for supporters for his political party. The team finished just two points behind the league champions.
