Tribute to the Wise One: Atlético de Madrid Remembers Luis Aragonés
This Saturday marks eleven years since the passing of Luis Aragonés, a legend of Atlético de Madrid. During the Liga EA Sports match against Mallorca, the club paid tribute to the ‘Wise One’ with a minute of silence at the Metropolitano stadium, accompanied by an ovation from the fans.
Mallorca supporters also showed their respect by chanting his name. Aragonés’ statue was visited by hundreds of fans, who left flowers in his memory. As a player, Aragonés played 370 games and scored 173 goals, remaining the top scorer until Griezmann broke his record.
He won three leagues and two Copa del Generalísimo trophies. As a coach, he achieved historic successes, including an Intercontinental Cup, a league title, and three Copa del Rey trophies. He also led Spain to win Euro 2004. In the same match, Diego Simeone reached 500 games in the top division, a milestone that coincided with the emotional celebration of Aragonés’ life.
