Future in Goal: Atlético Looks to the Youth Academy
Atlético de Madrid’s goal is in good hands with Jan Oblak, the current Zamora in LaLiga, and Juan Musso, the goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded in the Copa del Rey. However, the club faces a change in the rearguard.
Antonio Gomis, until now the team’s third goalkeeper, has decided not to renew his contract and seek new challenges for next season, after rejecting offers in the winter.
The young goalkeeper from Elche is looking for a team where he can add minutes and develop his professional career, after two years of valuable experience on the bench, training with top-level goalkeepers and experiencing Champions League matches.
Faced with this situation, Atlético will have to find a replacement for Gomis for next season. Alejandro Iturbe, a 21-year-old goalkeeper and a bet of the club, could be the chosen one to occupy that role.
Iturbe rejected offers from the Second Division to remain in the subsidiary and help the team to ascend, which demonstrates his commitment to Atlético. In case Iturbe does not accept the role of third goalkeeper, other options that the club manages are Esquivel, current second goalkeeper of the subsidiary, or even some of the talents of Juvenil A, such as Álvaro Moreno and Dani Rubio, who already had the opportunity to perform the preseason with the first team.
