Álvarez emulates Luis García! Rojiblanco milestone after 31 years
How great is Atleti! Last league matchday left us with a historic moment. Julián Álvarez became the first Rojiblanco player in 31 years to score two penalties in the same La Liga match at the Metropolitano.
A record that had resisted since the 1993-94 season, when Luis García achieved the feat against Athletic at the Calderón. Álvarez, with his precision and composure, converted the two penalties awarded to Atlético against Real Valladolid, the first committed on Giuliano and the second on Marcos Llorente, unleashing euphoria among the fans.
This achievement breaks a drought since that match against Athletic. Since then, Atleti had up to four opportunities to repeat the feat, but luck was not on our side. We remember the 2009-10 season against Mallorca, with a penalty goal by Forlán after having missed another.
In 2013-14, against Valencia, Diego Costa also scored a penalty after having missed the first, and in that same season he repeated the story against Elche after Villa’s miss.
