Herrera returns to Mexican football after stints with Atlético Madrid and Houston Dynamo
Former Atlético Madrid player Héctor Herrera has returned to Mexico eleven years after leaving for Europe as a star signing for Toluca. Herrera joined Portuguese club Porto in 2013, where he was captain and won a league title and two Supercopa editions.
In 2019, he joined Atlético Madrid and won LaLiga in the 2020-2021 season. In 2022, he joined American club Houston Dynamo, with whom he won the cup in 2023, but was expelled in November after spitting at a referee in a first-round playoff match in the MLS. ‘HH’ participated with the Mexican national team in the World Cups in Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, and was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Toluca will debut in the Clausura tournament under the command of Argentine coach Antonio Mohamed.
