First step to remove Courtois' plaque from the Paseo de Leyendas of Atlético de Madrid
In the latest meeting of the Social Commission of Atlético de Madrid, the first step was taken to remove Thibaut Courtois’ plaque from the Paseo de Leyendas. The club agreed to establish criteria to remove plaques in the next meeting to be held before summer.
Courtois played for Atlético from 2011 to 2015 and won a Liga, a Europa League, a European Super Cup, and a Copa del Rey. However, his departure to Chelsea and subsequent signing with Real Madrid did not sit well with the Colchonero fans.
In the prelude to the 2022 final against Liverpool, Courtois said he was on the ‘right side of history’ playing for Real Madrid, which angered the fans and led to the removal of his plaque.
In the last derby, Courtois celebrated and encouraged the animation stand to continue singing, which led to fans throwing objects at him and the match being interrupted for 10 minutes. In the next meeting of the Social Commission, it is expected that criteria will be established to remove other plaques of historic club players who earned the enmity of the fans after an abrupt departure, such as Hugo Sánchez, Agüero, or Joao Félix.
