Atleti's Secret Shield in the Heart of Madrid
Madrid hides treasures that are only revealed from a bird’s-eye view. In Ciudad Universitaria, a red and white wink awaits discovery: the Plaza de Viena, with the unmistakable shape of the Atlético de Madrid shield.
But what is the story behind this peculiar square? To understand this tribute, we must go back to 1923, the year in which the original Estadio Metropolitano opened its doors. This stadium was Atlético’s first home, hosting more than 500 matches and witnessing sporting achievements and diverse events.
Unfortunately, the Spanish Civil War reduced it to rubble, like other facilities in the area. After the war, the stadium was rebuilt and later, in 1966, Atlético played its last game there against Athletic de Bilbao, winning 1-0 with a goal from Cardona.
That same year, the club moved to the Estadio Vicente Calderón, and the Metropolitano was demolished. In its place, the Plaza de Viena was erected, preserving the silhouette of the Atleti shield as a permanent tribute to its past. A symbol visible from above, a constant reminder of the red and white legacy in the heart of Madrid. A secret that every true Atleti fan should know.
