The Derby Marked by Incidents: Sanction for Atlético and Subsequent Reduction
The Madrid derby played on September 29 of last year at the Metropolitano was marked by serious incidents. From the South stand, lighters were thrown at Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, a former Atlético player, causing the game to be halted for several minutes.
The match ended with a 1-1 draw. Following these events, the Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation sanctioned Atlético with the closure of the lower section of the South stand for three games and a fine of 45,000 euros.
However, after an appeal by the club, on October 17, the sanction was reduced to a single game closure of sectors 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, and 133, along with a fine of 3,000 euros. Atlético complied with this sanction in the league match against Leganés, which they won 3-1, and decided not to appeal further.
