Correa, a Significant Absence: Five-Match Suspension
Tough news for the Red and White fans: Ángel Correa, a key player in Atlético de Madrid’s attack, has been suspended for five matches after his expulsion in the match against Getafe.
The RFEF Disciplinary Committee has applied article 99 of the Disciplinary Code, considering his words to the referee as “insults, offenses and injurious attitudes.” The sanction, of a serious nature, means that Correa will not be able to play in any official competition for the next five matches.
This means that Simeone will not be able to count on the Argentine in the crucial match against Barcelona at the Metropolitano, a vital league match for the team’s European aspirations. He will also not be available in the league matches against Espanyol, Sevilla and Valladolid.
In addition to the match against Barcelona, Correa will miss the match against Espanyol which precedes the return of the Copa semi-finals. A significant loss for the Colchoneros, who will have to face these important commitments without one of their most destabilizing players.
Atlético de Madrid now has ten days to appeal the sanction before the Appeals Committee. However, given the application of the minimum degree of the sanction, the chances of it being reduced are slim. An important absence that the team will have to make up for with the quality and effort of the rest of the squad.
