Turpin to Whistle: Euroderby on the Horizon
Attention, Rojiblancos! The referee for the crucial first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Real Madrid is known. The chosen one is Frenchman Clément Turpin, a referee with experience in major European events.
He will be assisted by Jérôme Brisard in VAR, along with Willy Delajod as VAR assistant, Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages on the sidelines, and Mathieu Vernice as fourth official.
Turpin has already refereed Real Madrid on several occasions, including important victories such as the 2021-2022 Champions League final against Liverpool. But what really interests us is his record with our Atleti.
Turpin has refereed Atlético de Madrid in four Champions League matches, all in the group stage. We especially remember the victory in Porto (1-3) in the 2021-2022 season. In addition, he was present in the draw against Bayern Munich (1-1) at the Metropolitano in the 2020-2021 season.
He also led Simeone’s team in the 2017-2018 Europa League semi-final against Arsenal (1-1), a campaign that culminated in the conquest of the title. We trust that his appointment is a guarantee of impartiality and that our Atleti, with the unconditional support of the fans, will achieve a positive result in this important European clash.
