Atlético de Madrid fights for top-8 in the Champions League
Atlético de Madrid defeated Slovan de Bratislava at the Metropolitano (3-1) with two goals from Griezmann and one from Julián Alvarez. The objective was to improve the overall goal difference, which could be decisive in determining the final standings of the teams.
Atlético is eleventh, just one point behind the eighth place, which is held by Lille. The mattress makers still have a chance to finish in the top eight, but they must win the remaining two games (Leverkusen at the Metropolitano and Salzburg away).
Even if they win both games, Atlético’s place in the top-8 is not guaranteed, which guarantees direct qualification to the final 16 of the Champions League. Atlético will host Bayer Leverkusen at the Metropolitano on January 21 and visit Salzburg a week later.
