Atlético de Madrid Faces its European Nemesis
Atlético de Madrid has faced Real Madrid five times in European competitions, in matches that have marked a before and after in the history of both clubs. The first encounter dates back to the 1958-59 season, when Real Madrid, European champion, faced Atlético in an exciting duel that required a tiebreaker match in Zaragoza.
Despite the Colchoneros’ effort, Madrid took the victory and continued its path towards its fourth European Cup. Years later, in Lisbon 2014, Atlético, led by Godín, caressed glory, but a goal from Sergio Ramos in the last minute forced extra time, where Real Madrid prevailed.
The 2016 Milan final was another painful chapter, with an initial goal from Sergio Ramos in offside that conditioned the match and a penalty shootout that smiled again on the white team. In the semifinals of the 2016-17 Champions League, Real Madrid again crossed paths with Atlético.
Despite a brave comeback attempt at the Vicente Calderón, a goal from Isco sentenced the tie in favor of Madrid. In summary, although the Madrid derbies are always intense and disputed, in Europe, the balance has historically leaned towards the side of Real Madrid. However, Atleti fans remain hopeful of seeing their team break this streak and reach new heights on the continent.
