Cerci and his Unexpected Stint at Atleti
Former footballer Alessio Cerci, who wore the red and white jersey during the 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons, has revealed details about his arrival at Atlético de Madrid. In a recent interview, Cerci confessed that his signing for the Colchoneros club was not entirely to his liking, as his desire was to remain in Italian football.
Despite having arrived from Torino after an outstanding season with 13 goals and 11 assists, the Italian player never felt completely comfortable in the team led by El Cholo. “I went reluctantly,” admitted Cerci, who felt frustrated at not being able to continue his career in Italy.
This initial lack of motivation and a less-than-optimal physical condition upon arriving at the club, according to his statements, influenced his performance and lack of opportunities within the coach’s scheme.
Despite the investment made by Atlético, Cerci played only eleven matches, scoring one goal, before being loaned to Milan. After a loan spell and a long knee injury, Cerci returned to Atlético in 2016, although his second stint at the club was also unsuccessful.
The Italian player, who arrived at Atleti with high expectations, failed to establish himself in the team and finally disassociated himself from the club in 2021, ending his career as a footballer. His time at Atleti, although brief, left a story of unmet expectations and a feeling of dissatisfaction on the part of the player.
