Simeone: Outrage and Anger over Julián's Penalty
Diego Simeone, in an interview with DAZN prior to Atlético de Madrid’s debut in the Club World Cup, held nothing back when talking about the controversial penalty disallowed to Julián Alvarez. The Cholo, visibly affected, expressed a deep feeling of outrage and violence at the referee’s decision.
‘We feel outraged, violated, as if something happened that is not understood and will not be understood,’ Simeone declared, emphasizing the importance of the moment and the team’s hard work to get there.
The Argentine coach recalled how he experienced the moment, going from initial euphoria to bewilderment when he saw the goal disallowed. Despite the initial explanation about a double touch, the subsequent review revealed that there had been no such infringement, which generated great frustration in the coach and the team.
Simeone did not hesitate to describe the play as historic, lamenting that situations like this change the course of a competition. In addition, he recalled Sergio Ramos’ offside goal in the 2016 Champions League final, another refereeing error that marked a before and after for Atlético. Although the referee acknowledged his mistake years later, Simeone stressed that ’the moments do not return’, making it clear that the outrage over Julián’s penalty will remain as a scar in the memory of the club and its fans.
