The day Gil and Sanz bet 250,000 pesetas on penalties

2024-12-29 Diario As

On September 29, 1997, the sixth edition of the Partido contra la Droga was held at the Bernabéu. A particularity of that day was that the players of Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid shared a team and a white, red and purple shirt with both badges.

In front of them, a LaLiga selection. The presidents of both teams, Jesús Gil and Lorenzo Sanz, bet 250,000 pesetas (about 1,500 euros) with judge Baltasar Garzón and journalist Luis del Olmo that they would score a penalty.

Both presidents got the same result: they scored on Del Olmo, but not on Garzón, who saved both shots. Jesús Gil’s team won 1-0 in the celebrity match. The main match was full of stars and reunions. The Madrid team won 4-3, with goals from Raúl, Suker, Morientes and Juninho; against those of Felipe, Pompei and Pauleta. Solidarity and good humor triumphed at the Bernabéu.
