Atlético: A Giant Against the Giants
Atlético de Madrid has proven to be a formidable rival against the big teams in La Liga, earning 23 out of a possible 30 points in their direct clashes, a feat not seen since the 1969-70 season. This stellar performance includes seven wins, two draws, and only one defeat.
Los Rojiblancos have managed to win both matches against Athletic and Valencia, with aggregate scores of 2-0 and 6-0 respectively, and also dominated Sevilla with an aggregate of 6-4. In addition, they achieved a valuable away victory against Barça by 1-2.
The only team that managed to beat Atlético was Barça at the Metropolitano, in an exciting match that ended 2-4. On the other hand, the derbies against Madrid ended in 1-1 draws, with goals from Correa at home and Julián at the Bernabéu, securing a point in each match for Cholo’s team.
Despite these good results against direct rivals, and although luck did not favor the team in the K.O. competitions, where they were eliminated in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey, Atlético is still fighting in La Liga, seeking to finish the season in the best possible way and preparing to face the Club World Cup in the United States.
