Atlético's Reaction After Controversial Refereeing in Champions League
Following the Champions League elimination against Real Madrid, the controversial refereeing continues to generate debate within Atlético de Madrid.
The focus is on the annulment of the penalty scored by Julián Álvarez during the decisive shootout, an action that, according to the Rojiblanco club, does not conform to the correct interpretation of the rules of the game.
Atlético’s sports management, after thoroughly reviewing the match, does not understand the VAR’s decision, arguing that a clear displacement of the ball is not seen as required by the regulations.
Faced with this situation, the club raised a formal inquiry to UEFA, requesting explanations about the controversial play. UEFA responded that, although minimal, the player made contact with the ball using his supporting foot before hitting it, which forced the VAR to point out the infraction.
However, the European body recognized the need to review the rule in cases of unintentional double touch and announced that it will hold talks with FIFA and the IFAB. Despite the explanation, great frustration persists at Atlético, considering that the VAR’s intervention is not justified as it is not a flagrant error.
Although the club considered various options, it has finally decided not to challenge the match, reaffirming its respect for the refereeing work and its commitment to collaborating in improving the system. Atlético de Madrid is now focusing on the next challenges, with its sights set on Sunday’s match against Barcelona, without excuses and with the determination to continue competing at the highest level.
