Atlético Madrid fights for the winter championship
Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid are the only teams vying for the winter championship title in the 2023-24 season. Both teams have played 18 games and have 41 and 40 points respectively. Ancelotti’s team will face Valencia on January 3, while Atlético Madrid will face Osasuna on January 12.
Although being the winter champion has no official relevance, the team that finishes first in the first half of the season usually ends up being the champion. In the last 20 years, the winter champion won the title in 17 occasions.
Atlético Madrid has been the winter champion on eleven occasions, but only in three of them did they finish as leaders of the first half of the season. We will see if Simeone’s team can finish the first half of the season as leaders and what happens in the last match against Girona.
