Atleti to Champions! And other Spanish teams to Europe?
Atlético fans, next season could be historic for Spanish football in Europe! Imagine up to ten teams from our League fighting in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
Sounds like a dream? Well, it could become a reality! UEFA awards extra spots to federations with the best performance over the last five years, and Spain is well-positioned to secure one of those spots for the Champions League, thus adding five representatives in the top competition.
Atleti, of course, among them! But that’s not all. To reach ten teams, we need Athletic Club to lift the Europa League, which would give them direct access to the Champions League, as long as they don’t finish in the top four of La Liga.
A double prize for Basque and Spanish football! In addition, Betis could add another spot if they conquer the Conference League, provided they don’t qualify for the Champions League or Europa League via the League.
And let’s not forget the spot awarded by the Copa del Rey, which could benefit another team if the champion is already qualified.
