Colchoneros Fans Raise Their Voice to UEFA
Atlético de Madrid fans are not giving up in the face of what they consider an injustice in the Champions League. The International Union of Atlético de Madrid Supporters Clubs has appealed to Football Supporters Europe (FSE), a European organization that brings together fans from more than 50 countries, to file a formal complaint with UEFA.
The main reason is the controversial annulment of Julián Álvarez’s goal in the penalty shootout against Real Madrid, a match that meant Atleti’s elimination from the competition. The Atlético supporters clubs consider that the decision was not only unfair, but could constitute a serious violation of the rules.
The Union also criticizes UEFA for ratifying the decision based on a video presented belatedly, which has raised suspicions among fans. They feel that significant damage has been caused to the club’s image and prestige. But the protest is not limited to the specific play.
The Union of Supporters also denounces the conduct of some Real Madrid players, such as Antonio Rüdiger, Thibaut Courtois and Vinicius Junior, whom they accuse of offensive gestures and threats towards the Rojiblancos fans.
Images of these incidents are widely circulating in the media. In summary, the Atleti fans, through their supporters clubs, are seeking for UEFA to take action and clarify what happened, seeking compensation for the sporting, economic and social damage they consider to have suffered.
