Baena: Heading to the Metropolitano
Atlético de Madrid has intensified negotiations to sign Álex Baena, the Villarreal midfielder, making him their top priority to strengthen the team for the current season.
After the end of LaLiga, the rojiblanco club has initiated formal talks with Villarreal, who were already aware of the interest for some time, as was the player himself. Baena’s desire is to join Atlético and be available to Diego Simeone for the Club World Cup.
The player said goodbye to the Castellón fans, and both Villarreal’s majority shareholder and the coach hinted at his possible departure. Despite having a release clause of 60 million euros, there is an agreement that Baena can leave for a figure between 45 and 50 million in case of an attractive offer.
Baena rejected a proposal from Saudi Arabia in January, prioritizing playing for a top European team. Atlético has already reached an agreement with the player and is now negotiating with Villarreal, who have shown interest in Rodrigo Riquelme.
Although Villarreal prefers the operations to be independent, optimism at Atlético is moderate due to Baena’s willingness and Villarreal’s knowledge of his chosen destination. Relations between the two clubs are favorable, suggesting that an agreement could be reached soon, allowing Baena to join Atlético for the Club World Cup. Cholo’s team will face PSG in Los Angeles on June 15.
