Atleti: Hincapié, a Defensive Ace Up Their Sleeve
Atlético de Madrid, ever ambitious, is already planning for the 2025 season and has its sights set on the talented Argentine center-back Cuti Romero to strengthen its defense.
However, given the potential difficulty in negotiating with Daniel Levy, president of Tottenham, and with the public interest of coach Ange Postecoglou in retaining the player after winning the Europa League, the Rojiblancos have a solid alternative: Piero Hincapié.
The Ecuadorian center-back from Bayer Leverkusen was already targeted by Atleti in the past and would now be receptive to the idea of joining Simeone’s team. There is a verbal agreement with Hincapié in case the negotiations for Romero do not materialize.
The player would bring defensive solidity and versatility, being able to play both as a center-back and as a left-back, a position that Atleti seeks to reinforce.
Hincapié, who played at the Metropolitano with Leverkusen in the Champions League 24-25, where he even scored a goal, is a player with good ball distribution and defensive strength, qualities highly valued by Simeone. While Atlético is willing to invest heavily in Cuti Romero, Tottenham’s potential high financial demands could open the door for Hincapié, a player who already knows the Rojiblancos’ interest and who would fit perfectly into Cholo’s scheme.
