Atlético de Madrid seeks to improve their accuracy in Liga
The last two results of Atlético de Madrid in Liga have slowed down the team’s progress. Leganés ended the historic winning streak and Villarreal took advantage of the physical and emotional hangover of the team after the Champions League.
In both cases, the red and whites lamented a penalty, the one missed by Griezmann in Butarque and the one signaled to Reinildo over Gerard despite touching the ball first. And, in general, especially in some runs, a worrying lack of accuracy.
Against Marcelino’s team, Atlético made 20 shots. Against Borja’s team, there were 19. In total, 39 attempts to score a single goal, Samuel Lino’s against Villarreal.
Only twice have the red and whites shot more times in Liga: against Leganés, but in the first round, the team made 24 shots, although on that occasion they scored three goals to come back.
The record was against Espanyol, that fateful night in August when Cholo’s team did not score a single goal despite 25 attempts, seven of them on target. But in 2025 the episode repeats itself and, after a couple of warnings (18 shots against Marbella and nine against Osasuna, 0-1 and 1-0), two setbacks have arrived.
That’s why the coach insists on asking for figures from the second line: Giuliano, Barrios, Lino, Gallagher. Atlético’s next challenges do not allow for further inaccuracies. In Austria (Wednesday 29) the pass to the round of 16 is played against a Salzburg that has conceded 23 goals in seven Champions League rounds.
Then, Mallorca arrives at the Metropolitano (Saturday 1) and, subsequently, two decisive appointments in the Copa, the quarterfinals against Getafe (Tuesday 4), and Liga, the derby at the Bernabéu (Saturday 8). Very important exams for which Atlético will have to significantly improve this 1 of 39 that has penalized them in Liga.
