Correa's Future: A Legal Way Out of Atlético?
Ángel Correa’s future at Atlético de Madrid hangs in the balance after recent events. FIFA regulations, specifically Article 17 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, could offer a way for him to leave, even without prior agreement.
This article, temporarily in force, allows for the termination of a contract for just cause, understood as a situation in which the continuation of the contractual relationship cannot reasonably be expected.
Although Correa is no longer in the protected period of his contract, he could still invoke this regulation. This would imply a possible compensation to Atlético de Madrid for the remaining year of the contract.
It is important to note that, although Correa’s destination club would not be automatically sanctioned, it could be held responsible if it is proven that it influenced the player’s decision to break his contract.
Both the player and the possible new club are obliged to cooperate with FIFA in case of doubts about such influence, responding in good faith to any request for information.
In the event that Correa decides to unilaterally terminate his contract, the RFEF should facilitate the international transfer within 72 hours, according to Article 11 of Annex 3 of the Regulations. Undoubtedly, a complex situation that could define the future of the talented Argentinian player in our Atleti.
