Atlético de Madrid in the Spotlight
TVE presenter Ramón García has sparked controversy by referring to a coach as ‘foolish’ at an event hosted by the Itzalan de Santutxu fan club, leading many to believe he was targeting Atlético de Madrid’s Diego Pablo Simeone.
This is not the first time Ramón García has made a statement against Simeone, as after Athletic eliminated Atlético from the Copa del Rey last season, he appeared on a Castilla La Mancha program with a chant directed at Simeone.
The controversy centers around Simeone’s reference to Athletic Club as ’el Bilbao’, which has caused unrest among the team’s fans. Despite Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte’s attempts to put the issue behind them, it seems the topic remains sensitive.
Ramón García has defended his stance, arguing that it’s essential to distinguish between those who use a city’s name to refer to a team out of ignorance and those who do so intentionally. Atlético de Madrid and its coach continue to make headlines, and this controversy is just one example of the passion and commitment that football generates in Spain.
