Cerezo defends Atlético's stance before UEFA

Enrique Cerezo, president of Atlético de Madrid, has defended the club’s position regarding the controversial penalty disallowed to Julián Álvarez in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Real Madrid.

Cerezo expressed his personal opinion, although he believes it coincides with that of the club, arguing that once a match is over, the result is unchangeable. The president acknowledged that the club raised its protest to UEFA after the penalty action.

However, UEFA’s response, according to Cerezo, did not provide any clarity. Asked about the club’s alleged tepidness, Cerezo explained that, while they support the initiatives of the fans who seek for UEFA to show the original video of the VAR decision, as a club, he considers that taking the case to court would be like “shouting into the wilderness”.

Cerezo emphasized that Atlético de Madrid did what it had to do: raise its protest and make the facts known. He added that the reality is that, historically, once a match is over, no one changes the result. Therefore, the club considers that it has exhausted the available avenues, leaving in the hands of others the possibility of continuing with legal actions.
