Colchoneros' Reaction: Atlético Faces VAR Controversy
Following the penalty shootout defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League, Atlético de Madrid has expressed its disbelief and frustration over the annulled goal by Julián Alvarez, after VAR review.
The club considers there was a ‘misuse of VAR’ that had ’terrible consequences’, dashing the hopes of millions of fans and the team’s effort. The Rojiblancos emphasize that the message of the VAR review was not broadcast on screens or on television, as required by regulations.
Furthermore, it is considered that none of the replays clearly show the supposed displacement of the ball before the kick. After a thorough internal review, Atlético formally consulted UEFA, who confirmed the annulment based on an unintentional double touch by the player.
UEFA has announced that it will discuss with FIFA and IFAB the possible review of the rule in cases of unintentional double touch. Atlético, while maintaining its frustration, reaffirms its respect for the work of referees and its commitment to working from within to improve the system.
However, the club deeply regrets the incident and its consequences. From the colchonera entity they assure that ‘It is not in Atlético’s DNA to make excuses or divert attention’, the team is already focused on the next challenges, starting with the match against Barcelona.
