Cardoso, the New Colchonero Target for the Midfield
Atlético de Madrid has set its sights on Johnny Cardoso, Betis midfielder, as the main candidate to reinforce their midfield. The search for a ‘5’ to replace Thomas’ departure in 2020 seems to have found a name that excites the board and could fit perfectly into Cholo Simeone’s scheme.
While Thomas’ return was considered, his high salary and financial demands distance him from the Metropolitano. Cardoso, at just 23 years old, presents himself as a more attractive option in the long term, with the potential to lead the Rojiblanco midfield for a decade.
Carlos Bucero, convinced of the player’s potential, has pointed to Cardoso as the ideal signing to meet the team’s needs. Despite having recently renewed with Betis until 2030, Atlético is confident that the operation can be completed due to the Seville club’s need to generate income before June 30.
Although Tottenham also shows interest and has a preferential option, the final decision rests with Cardoso.
