Metropolitano, an insufficient fortress
Atlético’s season has been marked by a notable contrast between their performance at home and away. At the Metropolitano, the team has demonstrated its strength, but the lack of consistency on the road has ultimately pushed them away from the fight for the League title.
After a promising start that led them to be crowned winter champions, the Rojiblancos saw their chances of fighting for the championship fade away in the second half of the season, conceding valuable points in fields where, theoretically, they should have added them.
Simeone himself acknowledged the importance of those points lost away from home that, in the end, made the difference. The numbers speak for themselves: in the second round, Atlético has only added 9 out of 24 possible points away from their stadium, a clearly insufficient percentage to aspire to the maximum.
While visits to Real Madrid or Barça are always complicated, defeats against rivals, a priori, more accessible have weighed like slabs. In short, the irregularity shown away from the Metropolitano has condemned Atlético to settle for fighting for other goals this season.
