Witsel and his future with the Red Devils
Axel Witsel, Atlético de Madrid midfielder, remains a figure of interest for the Belgian national team. Despite not enjoying many minutes lately at the Metropolitano, the experienced player has held conversations with the new coach, Rudi García, about his possible participation in the national team.
Witsel revealed that García visited him in Madrid to discuss his situation. The player conveyed his physical readiness, although he acknowledged the lack of competitive rhythm. García, for his part, made no concrete promises, but Witsel’s inclusion in the pre-selection is a positive sign.
The Atlético player highlighted the good impression García made on him, describing him as a pleasant person with footballing ideas similar to his own, as confirmed by Eden Hazard, who had already worked with him at Lille.
Belgian media suggest that the coach sees Witsel as a valuable mentor for the new generation of Red Devils, a role that had already been assigned to him for the European Championship, although an injury frustrated his participation. Witsel’s last minutes with his national team were in early June 2024 during a friendly against Luxembourg (3-0).
