Hugo Sánchez: Aragonés' Legacy in my Success

The legendary Hugo Sánchez, considered one of the best Mexican footballers of all time, has highlighted the figure of Luis Aragonés as a key piece in his successful career in Spain.

During the presentation of a sculpture in his honor, ‘Golden Roots’, Sánchez recalled with affection and gratitude the advice of the ‘Wise Man of Hortaleza’ when he played for Atlético de Madrid. ‘Aragonés had a great influence on my career.

When I arrived at Atlético he told me: ‘Hugo, in this life you have to do great things, if you do them you will live forever’, and that marked me’, confessed ‘Hugol’. These words, according to the former striker, were an engine that drove him to pursue greatness and not give up until he achieved his goals.

Sánchez also recalled how Aragonés influenced his mentality, refusing to return to Mexico until he succeeded in European football. This determination, forged thanks to the coach’s advice, led him to become an idol both at Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid.

The sculpture, created by the Italian artist Dante Mortet, is inspired by a photograph in which Sánchez, wearing the Atlético de Madrid shirt, takes a penalty. ‘I think it was a match, which I painfully remember, it was against Real Madrid’, lamented Sánchez, who is an idol with Los Merengues. Mortet expressed his admiration for Sánchez, considering him a world icon worthy of this tribute.
