The Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid has filed a complaint for the racist insults of a spectator against Nico Williams during the Liga match played on April 27, 2024 at the Civitas Metropolitano stadium between Atlético de Madrid and Athletic Club de Bilbao.
The match was stopped for a few minutes after the forward complained of receiving insults from a sector of the south stand of the Metropolitano when he went to take a corner.
The complaint states that in the 36th minute of the match, when the Athletic player was heading towards the corner, he heard the insults of a man accompanied by gestures of racial contempt.
The shouts, repeated several times, consisted of the sounds ‘uh, uh, uh, uh’, an onomatopoeia that imitates the sound emitted by monkeys. Martínez Munuera, the referee of the match, stopped the match after Nico’s complaint, who pointed to a sector of the local fans located in the South Stand of the stadium.
The referee stopped the match after talking to the delegate, who ordered a warning message to be broadcast over the loudspeaker to stop the ‘offensive shouts’. Meanwhile, Koke, Giménez, Witsel and Lino approached the stand to ask for the insults to stop.
Days later, the Disciplinary Committee of the League decreed the partial closure of the Metropolitano stadium as a sanction, ordering the closure of the South Stand for two days.
However, the Appeals Committee of the Spanish Football Federation later accepted Atlético de Madrid’s appeal and annulled the partial closure of the Civitas Metropolitano stadium for two games and the fine of 20,000 euros imposed by the Disciplinary Committee on April 30. Now, the Prosecutor’s Office considers that the shouts against the footballer could be constitutive of a crime of injury to dignity.
